Awls, Cartilage

Definition : Awls designed for piercing small holes in cartilage. They are typically handheld, manual instruments with a slender, straight or curved, and frequently grooved working blade with a very sharp point and a handle that is an integral part or attached to the working blade. Cartilage awls are usually smaller and more slender than bone awls. These awls are used in plastic surgery (e.g., facial reconstruction) and oral surgery procedures; dedicated cartilage awls are also available for a variety of procedures (e.g., to fix nasal deformities, for lip augmentation).
